How do we prepare for a deep work session?
Whatever we do every day and night we want to do it better. The best way to achieve new heights in your work is to dive in it with deep focus sessions. We often mistake busyness for productivity: instantly answering messages that can totally wait, getting distracted by people with small tasks etc. It all lays a heavy toll on what you achieve during the day while the benefits of deep focused work extend well beyond professional life.
To have a successful deep work session you should consider trying a few things. First, schedule your time for deep work. Protect this time at all costs. Second, isolate yourself from any notifications during the sessions. Third, prepare with breathing techniques and/or meditation. Fourth, put on your headphones and listen to ambient, rhythmical music that has a good amount of repetitions. Fifth, after a deep work session let go of this intense focus state. You’ve done great and now should recharge the “concentration batteries”.
Don’t beat yourself up if you find it hard to focus during the first sessions. Deep focus is a complex skill and can’t be learned overnight. Regular practice will get you there, just be patient and kind to yourself.
